People often forget that most of the German troops had no idea about what was going on, they weren’t all fanatic Nazis bent on genocide, they were just regular soldiers who answered the call when their country went to war.

Death camps and concentration camps were built WITHIN CITY LIMITS. Auschwitz, for example, is well within the city, and people take fucking strolls under its walls. I was fucking THERE, don’t even. The Polish knew, the Germans knew, it was LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE not to know. It’s even in the historical record, it’s even in fucking civilian diaries, THEY KNEW.

Sorry not sorry, German apologists, but what you’re seeing in this photo isn’t shock, it’s guilt. Richly deserved, completely merited GUILT. So take your, “Aw, those innocent little German soldiers, poor babies,” revisionist shit and shove it back up your collective ass.

There were 42,500 Nazi ghettos and concentration camps in Germany through 1933 to 1945.  3,000 in Berlin alone.  To quote the article:

Dr. Dean, a co-researcher, said the findings left no doubt in his mind that many German citizens, despite the frequent claims of ignorance after the war, must have known about the widespread existence of the Nazi camps at the time.

“You literally could not go anywhere in Germany without running into forced labor camps, P.O.W. camps, concentration camps,” he said. “They were everywhere.”

So yeah.  People knew, people everywhere knew, soldiers very fucking definitely and citizens as well.  Maybe not everyone knew the true extent of the brutality but it was pretty fucking obvious, and at the very least citizens have to have known that people were being killed by the thousands given the size of these camps and how commonplace they were.  The Warsaw Ghetto was big enough to ‘house’ 500,000 people.  There is very little chance that they ‘didn’t know’.

I’ve been to the Warsaw Uprising Museum in Poland. Everyone knew what was happening to people in the ghetto. Every person there, in or out of the ghetto, knew that being taken away to camps was a fate worse than death. If they somehow didn’t know with all the obvious clues and propaganda that openly dehumanized groups condemned by the nazis, they figured out pretty fucking fast when not just the adults but CHILDREN had to try and fight off the nazis when the decision was made to purge the main Warsaw ghetto.
